restless and leaning


I have a secret – don’t tell anyone:
I listen to Genesis to avoid the vacuum.

I am proficient in three languages
other than English:
Supervillain, Cryptozoological,
and Tranquilizer, all spoken eloquently
while gargling humors.

“Get up early and go do something,”
said Them. sagacity of the minstrels.
I call for a mistrial.

Three Mickey Rourke movies on TV
simultaneously. They didn’t teach me that
in high school.

A helicopter flies in circles over
the little league game. the raccoon
runs the same course around my birdbath.

I never think about retirement.
I only count the syllables, and I smile.

the shoulders of the heart

this poem will never be finished her grace, gentle to calm an outstretched and anxious palm, quiets all storm of memory, her own tide awash a melody of opaque recognition that, by definition, is a hazy spell no slumber can break, no number of make-believe apparitions, to wrap her heart in such toughness as to clear the lane of her progress from debris, her grace unto me is the pinpoint of light that steadies and readies my own night as it descends and unbends, her grace, gentle and calm.
